He was sure he did not even hear the man sitting down in the seat opposite him.

Somehow his feeling of relaxation just seemed to leave him, as the temperature is supposed to drop in a haunted room, and he opened his eyes.On his train journey to a radio interview, Michael Greenwood is plagued by the unwanted and constant attentions of a fellow traveler, attentions which for the most part he manages to ignore.

At the end of the interview, just as Michael is keeping his promise to say hello to his twelve-year-old daughter and her friend, he impishly adds a message to Steve - thanks for making the journey sheer purgatory. That evening when he picks up the phone, there is a thick snarl: Ill give you purgatory.Michael at first dismisses what appears to be an empty threat - perhaps its a student joke- it is, after all, rag week at the university at which he is a lecturer. But it soon becomes apparent that it is but the start of a series of pranks - a break-in at his office- a grotesque drawing on a very public blackboard that debases his dead wifes memory and his tentative new relationship with mature student Christine- an obscene birthday card sent to his daughter - and each proves more sinister than the last.

With no evidence and only Michaels paranoid suspicions that it is the work of his traveling companion, the police can do nothing. Until the pranks turn to a terrifying violence that strikes at the very heart of Michaels fragile happiness and that of his family. And by then it might be too late.
